The case against the Wegmans (in Northborough) hype

Let's get this out of the way up front: I don't have anything against Wegmanshttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif. It is probably a nice store. I bet I will shop there someday. My wife has been eager to get to the Northborough location since Opening Day.

What I take issue with is the hype surrounding Wegmans.

Which media organization talked to small business owners in Northborough and surrounding towns to ask what they thought about the arrival of Wegmans? Is there only one side to this story?

Hi Bobb-

So happy to find your 351 blog via Universal Hub. My partner and I have talked about doing the very thing you're blogging about and I think it's fantastic. You've been bookmarked!

I read your Telegram post re: Wegmans and I might offer one thing you hadn't considered (and probably isn't the norm.) I live in Boston and I go to Wegmans. Not for all my shopping, but it beats the once a year 6 hour trip to the one in Geneseo, NY. I don't venture to your neck of the woods often, but when I go to Wegmans, I visit other local stores when I'm there. Others might do a similar thing - and I hope they do.

I appreciate Wegmans for their, what appears to be, incredible employee loyalty and their reasonably priced, good quality house brand foods. I still go to the Blanchards in W. Rox for booze, the Rozzie farmer's market for veggies in the summer, Tony's market for my sausage... I believe in shopping small and shopping local, but I also believe in shopping in stores I love, and Wegmans is such a place.

I really appreciate you looking at the apparent one-sided-ness of coverage of this story and look forward to reading more of your work. :-)

Thanks for the thoughtful comments. I like your approach to a mix between big stores and small local shops. And perhaps Northborough's Wegmans will draw others to area shops - like an attraction of sorts! Though I heard today they're planning another Wegmans in Newton. I just feel it and stores like it draw my limited time and money away from the smaller shops with locally grown/raised food. But Wegmans has earned the loyalty of many that's for sure and is probably better than other big store options. Anyway, thanks for reading; we hope you come back soon!
